research & development

Ours is a business built on innovation. For upstream, every percentage increase in recovery rates adds millions of barrels of recoverable oil to our reserves base. Every gain in operating efficiency expands our ability to provide more energy at lower cost. And more reserves and longer-lived production means more energy for opportunities, in Saudi Arabia and for our customers around the globe.

jobs in research & development

Join us here and you’ll be joining some of the world’s most talented scientists and researchers, working with the latest technologies to produce industry-changing discoveries.

What we do

Our Upstream research is focused on reservoir engineering, computational modeling, production, drilling, geophysics and geology and is carried out by our Advanced Research Center, Exploration and Petroleum Engineering Center (EXPEC ARC). Here we’ve made significant breakthroughs in seismic measurement, simulation, and visualization, which all increase our ability to recover our precious hydrocarbon resources.

In our Downstream business, focusing on technology improves our production value chain from discovery and recovery to processing and delivery, while helping us ensure energy stability and enhance economic opportunity.

Our state-of-the-art R&D Center explores the techniques and technologies that can make these impacts. For Downstream, scientists focus on improved energy efficiency, cleaner fuels, and reduced carbon emissions. In particular, they’re looking at developing industrial processes and applications for better carbon utilization, including the development of low-cost technologies for CO2 capture from fixed and mobile sources, and the methods to convert CO2 into valuable chemical intermediates for commercial use.

To support all of our research in this field, we also have a range of partnerships and dedicated offices around the world that give us access to an entirely new spectrum of ideas and innovative thinking.

In 2014, we were granted 99 patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
